On Tuesday, Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones will be holding a community forum on immigration. His main guest is Thomas Homan, Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a Facebook post, Sheriff Jones said this forum is to address fear, misinformation, and conflicting information in our communities.
He adds in the post that: "While reasonable people can disagree on many facets of immigration, I want the community to at least hear the truth directly from the sources, and be able to ask candid questions. Everyone is welcome."
In response, Mayor Darrell Steinberg and Sacramento Leaders announced a press conference and unity rally before the forum.
Mayor Steinberg will be joined by Safe Haven Task Force Chair Councilmember Eric Guerra and other Sacramento community leaders. California Senate President Pro Tempore, Kevin de Leon will also be present.
This comes on the heel if Attorney General Jeff Sessions calling for an end to "sanctuary cities," which shelter people living in the country illegally by refusing to help the federal government enforce immigration laws.
Sessions added that cities that don't follow federal law could lost federal funding. This threat has been made in the past by President Donald Trump, and Mayor Steinberg has said in response that Sacramento will remain a sanctuary city.
Meanwhile, local churches like St. Mark's Methodist United Church are discussing ways to become sanctuary churches.
"We are looking at ways to extend hospitality," said Reverend Alan Jones. "There's a lot of fear in the air."
Reverend Jones and his church are part of Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT). It's an organization of over 56 congregations, schools, and community groups in Sacramento County. Many of their members and groups will be represented at the unity rally.
