Below is a reflection written by Laurel Hollis
Recently I joined a large group of people from SacACT and Mutual Housing for a tour of the Sacramento Board of Supervisors and a question and answer session with County District 2 Supervisor Patrick Kennedy. The idea behind the tour was to familiarize us with the home of our County government and to make us more comfortable with attending and speaking at board meetings. Showing up and expressing our point of view at these meetings has a real impact on the County’s decisions. Still, it’s intimidating. Doing the tour and sitting down with Patrick made me feel more confident about attending in the future. I was struck by two things. First, I noted the diversity of our group. There was a sprinkling of non-profit staff members to guide us. There were also people new to SacACT who learned about the event on social media. Some were residents of Mutual Housing properties who were gaining leadership skills to represent their fellow residents’ voices as people in need of wrap around services. Some of us came from other cities. Some were quick to pose questions to the Supervisor. Some required translation services, and were able to follow along with support from a SacACT staffer. Second, I was impressed with Mr. Kennedy’s breadth of knowledge of our county. I didn’t know that Supervisors serve not only on the governing board, but also on numerous other boards and commissions. Patrick serves on thirty boards, notably the Regional Transit District. He took the light rail to our meeting, despite having a bad back that morning. He answered our questions in detail, with a minimum of hedging and avoiding difficult topics. We spent time discussing affordable housing, and the complicated legal and financial requirements that result in long timelines to bring projects to completion. Hazel Watson, our organizer, is hoping to schedule more tours and interviews with other Supervisors in the future. I recommend going to learn more about our local government and to feel less intimidated about speaking up for the issues that are so important to us.
